Wreath-laying set for Saturday morning at Marktplatz statue

The Gillespie County Historical Society will offer free admission on all museum campuses Friday and Saturday, May 5-6, to celebrate Founders Day.

On Saturday, the public is invited to the Founders Day Commemoration at Marktplatz with remarks by Glen Treibs at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 6. Treibs’ roots date back to the town's founding. He is a retired history teacher with a vast knowledge of Fredericksburg history.

A memorial wreath laying will take place at that time, with a guided tour at Der Stadt Friedhof Cemetery at 1 p.m.

On Friday, guests will enjoy living history activities at the Pioneer Museum, 325 West Main Street.

The Vereins Kirche, located on Marktplatz, and the Historic Jail on San Antonio Street, will be open and free to the public.

Pioneer Museum and the Vereins Kirche will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and the Historic Jail from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

In addition to the self-guided tour of the historic buildings on the museum grounds, living history experiences will be offered, including blacksmithing, chuckwagon cooking, frontier living, music and storytelling and a display of antique toys.

There will also be a corn sheller, fence-making display, Handwerkers and visits to the country schoolhouse.

Children must be accompanied by adult.

"This is the 177th anniversary of Fredericksburg's founding, and we are excited to offer free admission on all Pioneer Museum campuses to celebrate this day," said Monte Marshall, Pioneer Museum and GCHS Executive Director.

"We want all Gillespie County residents to know about their history and heritage. Pioneer Museum is a treasure," he added.

The museum is located at 325 W. Main St.
