Project highlights: emergency livelihoods assistance to safeguard the food security and local food production of the most vulnerable rural families affected by drought

Objective

To improve the livelihoods and food security of vulnerable smallholder farming households and landless labourers.

Activities implemented

• Trained 191 implementing partners’ personnel on good agricultural and livestock management practices.

• Distributed 2 400 tonnes of concentrated animal feed and 36 tonnes of fodder seed to 12 000 livestock-keeping households, and trained them on good livestock management practices.

• Administered 12 000 litres of deworming medicine, reaching 88 746 small and large ruminants.

• Distributed 12.15 tonnes of chickpea seed, 6.08 tonnes of kidney bean seed, 6.08 tonnes of maize seed, 9.6 tonnes of mung bean seed and 12.15 tonnes of sesame seed to 7 000 farming households, and trained them on good agricultural practices.

• Provided 600 households with unconditional cash transfers, disbursing USD 60 000 (USD 100/household).

• Engaged 6 000 households in cash-for-work activities for the rehabilitation/construction of 50 small-scale irrigation infrastructures, disbursing USD 600 000 (USD 100/household).

Results

• Enhanced the knowledge and technical skills of implementing partners’ personnel and the beneficiary households, thanks to training activities.

• Enabled 12 000 livestock-keeping households to improve the health and productivity of their livestock assets and produce 96 000 tonnes of fodder, thanks to the distribution of concentrated animal feed and fodder seed as well as the administration of deworming medicine.

• Enabled 7 000 farming households to cultivate 1 511 ha of land and produce 848.43 tonnes of chickpea, 115.56 tonnes kidney beans,

189.144 tonnes of maize, 509.20 tonnes of mung bean and 151.07 tonnes of sesame.

• Enabled 600 households to meet their immediate needs, thanks to unconditional cash transfers.

• Enhanced irrigation for 14 710 ha of land and enabled 6 000 households to meet their immediate needs, thanks to cash-forwork activities.

• Contributed to improving the livelihoods and food security of the targeted communities, thanks to increased food production and access to cash.
